History of Snow Canyon
The story of Snow Canyon began millions of years before the first people arrived. The park’s towering red sandstone cliffs were formed from ancient sand dunes that hardened into rock over time, while black lava flows and volcanic cones were created by eruptions that occurred as recently as a few thousand years ago.
Long before European settlers entered the region, Native American peoples called this area home. The Ancestral Puebloans and later the Southern Paiute lived, hunted, and traveled throughout the canyon, leaving behind rock art, pottery fragments, and other traces of their presence that can still be found today.
During the mid-1800s, Mormon pioneers settled nearby communities including St. George, Santa Clara, and Ivins. The canyon was named after Erastus and Lorenzo Snow, influential church leaders who helped guide settlement efforts in southern Utah.
Recognizing the area’s unique beauty and cultural significance, Utah designated Snow Canyon as a state park in 1958. Today, visitors can experience a landscape shaped by ancient seas, volcanic activity, Native American history, and the pioneering spirit that helped define the region.
