About Snow Canyon State Park

Snow Canyon State Park is one of Utah’s most stunning natural destinations, featuring towering red sandstone cliffs, ancient lava flows, and miles of scenic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Located just minutes from St. George, the park offers breathtaking desert landscapes, unique geological formations, and opportunities to explore hidden canyons, sand dunes, and native wildlife. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure or unforgettable scenery, Snow Canyon is a must-visit destination in Southern Utah.

History of Snow Canyon

The story of Snow Canyon began millions of years before the first people arrived. The park’s towering red sandstone cliffs were formed from ancient sand dunes that hardened into rock over time, while black lava flows and volcanic cones were created by eruptions that occurred as recently as a few thousand years ago.

Long before European settlers entered the region, Native American peoples called this area home. The Ancestral Puebloans and later the Southern Paiute lived, hunted, and traveled throughout the canyon, leaving behind rock art, pottery fragments, and other traces of their presence that can still be found today.

During the mid-1800s, Mormon pioneers settled nearby communities including St. George, Santa Clara, and Ivins. The canyon was named after Erastus and Lorenzo Snow, influential church leaders who helped guide settlement efforts in southern Utah.

Recognizing the area’s unique beauty and cultural significance, Utah designated Snow Canyon as a state park in 1958. Today, visitors can experience a landscape shaped by ancient seas, volcanic activity, Native American history, and the pioneering spirit that helped define the region.

Landscape of Snow Canyon

Snow Canyon State Park is renowned for its dramatic desert scenery and remarkable geological diversity. Within just a few miles, visitors can experience towering sandstone cliffs, ancient lava flows, rolling petrified dunes, narrow canyons, & more. The striking contrast between red rock formations and black volcanic rock creates some of the most memorable landscapes in Southern Utah.

The park lies at the intersection of the Mojave Desert, Great Basin, and Colorado Plateau, making it a unique meeting point of different ecosystems and geological regions. This convergence contributes to the variety of plants, wildlife, and natural features found throughout the park.

Among Snow Canyon’s most popular attractions are its lava tubes, sandstone caves, and scenic overlooks. Many of these features can be explored through the park’s extensive network of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, allowing visitors to experience the landscape up close.

Whether viewed from the scenic drive or explored on foot, Snow Canyon offers an incredible showcase of the natural forces that have shaped Southern Utah over millions of years. The result is a landscape that feels both ancient and otherworldly, yet remains easily accessible to visitors of all ages.
