Whiptail Trail Overview

The Whiptail Trail is a paved path that winds through the heart of Snow Canyon State Park, making it one of the park’s most accessible routes for walking, biking, and exploring. Stretching approximately six miles, the trail follows the scenic canyon floor between the south entrance and the Upper Galoot Picnic Area, passing towering Navajo sandstone cliffs, ancient lava flows, desert washes, and vibrant red rock landscapes. With minimal elevation gain and numerous access points, it’s perfect for visitors of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely stroll, an early morning bike ride, or using it to connect with other trails, the Whiptail Trail offers a relaxing way to experience the park’s spectacular scenery.

    The Whiptail Trail can be accessed from numerous locations throughout Snow Canyon State Park, including the south entrance, the Johnson Canyon Trailhead (& parking area), Sand Dunes Picnic Area, Hidden Pinyon Trailhead (& parking lot), and the Upper Galoot Picnic Area. Its wide, paved surface and gentle grades make it ideal for walking, running, biking, wheelchair users, strollers, and families with young children. Along the route, visitors pass beneath towering sandstone cliffs, alongside ancient black lava flows, and through open desert filled with sagebrush, cactus, and seasonal wildflowers.

    The trail serves as the primary connector to many of the park’s most popular hikes, including Hidden Pinyon, Pioneer Names, Sand Dunes, West Canyon, and the Three Ponds Trail. Near the park’s south entrance, the Whiptail Trail seamlessly connects to the regional paved trail system, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to continue into Ivins, Santa Clara, and St. George without leaving dedicated pathways. Whether used as a scenic destination on its own or as a gateway to the park’s many adventures, the Whiptail Trail is one of the most versatile and enjoyable ways to experience Snow Canyon.
