More About Chuckwalla Trail
The trail begins at the signed Chuckwalla Trailhead, a short drive from downtown St. George off Highway 18. The route follows a mostly level dirt and sand path through open desert, with a few gentle climbs as it winds toward the surrounding red cliffs. Along the way, hikers pass through striking sandstone terrain and may spot desert wildlife such as rabbits, raptors, and desert tortoises. Portions of the trail cross dry washes and loose sand, but the hike remains suitable for most visitors.
Unlike some trails in the reserve, Chuckwalla is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and leashed dogs alike, making it one of the more versatile routes near St. George. The trail connects directly to several other well-known routes in the area, including Turtle Wall, Beck Hill, and Paradise Rim, making it easy to extend into a longer outing. The trail offers little shade, so cooler mornings or evenings are best during the warmer months. Although the hike takes less than an hour to complete, its accessibility and central location make Chuckwalla one of the most popular trails near St. George.
