Hidden Pinyon Trail

The Hidden Pinyon Trail begins at the Hidden Pinyon Trailhead just off the Whiptail Trail, where hikers can travel the loop in either direction. The route climbs gradually across sandstone ledges, packed dirt, and stretches of slickrock marked by cairns and trail posts. As the trail gains elevation, it passes beneath towering Navajo sandstone cliffs before reaching several scenic overlooks that provide expansive views across Snow Canyon, including the canyon floor, black basalt lava flows, and the surrounding red and white rock formations. Along the route, hikers may spot pinyon pines, Utah junipers, desert wildflowers, lizards, and a variety of bird species that thrive in the high desert environment.

Hidden Pinyon is often considered one of the park’s best “sampler” hikes because it showcases many of Snow Canyon’s signature landscapes within a relatively short distance. The trail intersects with the Red Sands Trail, allowing hikers to extend their adventure toward Padre Canyon or create longer custom routes through the park. Although the elevation gain is modest, portions of the trail require walking over uneven slickrock and sandstone steps, making sturdy footwear recommended. With its outstanding viewpoints, varied terrain, and convenient location near the center of the park, the Hidden Pinyon Trail is a favorite for both first-time visitors and experienced hikers alike.
