Island in the Sky Climbing Area Overview
Island in the Sky is the largest and most developed climbing area in Snow Canyon State Park, with eight distinct crags and the highest concentration of established climbing routes in the park. The massive sandstone formation offers 58 routes ranging from approximately 5.5 to 5.12, with a mix of sport and traditional climbing.
Primarily west-facing, Island in the Sky offers everything from short cragging sessions to longer multi-pitch adventures, all surrounded by Snow Canyon’s dramatic red and white sandstone scenery.

More About Island in the Sky
Island in the Sky is a massive sandstone formation located near the center of Snow Canyon State Park. The climbing area is divided into eight main crags: Aftershock Wall, Circus Wall, Dip Area, The Doghouse, Indian Wall, Moss Canyon, Sand Dunes, and War Zone. Together, these areas offer one of the most varied collections of climbing routes in the park.
Routes range from relatively approachable climbs to challenging 5.12 routes, with both single-pitch and multi-pitch options. Much of the climbing is west-facing, making the area particularly well positioned for mid- to late-afternoon sun.
The climbing areas are accessed from four parking areas along Snow Canyon Drive, beginning near the Jenny’s Canyon parking area and continuing north toward the Pioneer Names access area. Because each crag has its own approach, climbers should research their specific route and access point before heading out.
Snow Canyon’s sandstone is extremely fragile when wet. Climbers should wait at least 24–48 hours after rain or snow before climbing, and should avoid climbing whenever the sandstone or surrounding ground remains damp.
