Padre Canyon
Padre Canyon Trail Overview
The Padre Canyon Trail is one of the most scenic and challenging routes in Snow Canyon State Park, offering rugged beauty and diverse terrain. Starting at the Padre Canyon Trailhead (near Tuacahn), from the Three Ponds Trail, or at the Johnson Canyon parking area, hikers climb nearly 600 feet to reach a dramatic saddle with sweeping views of red and white sandstone cliffs. The path varies from dirt to slickrock and often requires scrambling, with cairns marking the way. Beyond the saddle, hikers discover arches, unique formations, and quiet wilderness. Most of the trail lies within the Red Mountain Wilderness Area and Snow Canyon State Park.

More About Padre Canyon
The Padre Canyon Trail begins along the east bank of a wash, crossing private property owned by Tuacahn as well as lands managed by Snow Canyon State Park. Visitors are asked to respect posted signs and avoid restricted areas such as the equipment yard and animal corrals. From the Tuacahn gate, the trail climbs about 1½ miles and gains nearly 600 feet in elevation before reaching a high saddle. The route shifts between packed dirt, rocky ground, and stretches of boulder hopping, making it both challenging and rewarding. About three-quarters of the way up, a landslide has erased part of the trail, requiring some scrambling to rejoin the main path. At the saddle, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of red and white sandstone cliffs, remote peaks, and dramatic rock formations. From here, the trail drops ¾ of a mile toward a wash near the Three Ponds junction, losing around 230 feet of elevation. Cairns mark the way across slickrock, though no formal signs are present in the wilderness section. Keen explorers may also discover natural arches and other unique formations off the main trail.
The Padre Canyon Trail can also be accessed from the north via the Three Ponds Trail inside Snow Canyon State Park, though this route requires a permit or park pass. The approach covers about 1½ miles through deep sand before joining the main trail. A one-mile extension from the Johnson Canyon trailhead on Tuacahn Drive provides another access point, but it closes seasonally from March 15 to September 14 to protect desert tortoise habitat. This extension is an easier single-track path of packed dirt with a few small wash crossings and can be combined into a nearly seven-mile loop. The loop incorporates the Whiptail, West Canyon, and Three Ponds trails within Snow Canyon State Park, offering a diverse and moderately strenuous hiking experience.
